Best moments of 2016…..
I have to begin with the most recent, as it was the MOST fun for me. It is a tradition the past 3 years for the out-going Chairman of the Board to dress up as Santa for the December Chamber breakfast. I thought I would get a pass and maybe dress up as Mrs. Santa being that I am female. NOPE… that wasn’t the case. Yet, I was game. I don’t know what was more fun…. Playing the Christmas edition of Family Feud, delivering presents to our Board of Directors or when a 4 year old little girl wanted to get her picture taken with me. Later telling her mother, “Mommy, I know the real Santa Claus is at the mall. That was a lady dressed like Santa.” I think I convinced her I was Santa’s helper, to which she sang her Christmas wish list to me. Absolutely adorable! This was TONS of fun with the members of our chamber of commerce, playing games and ending 2016 with lots of laughs.
If you are not taking advantage of some of the networking opportunities the Chamber has available, you are missing out. The Women’s Networking Group is one of them. Back in April, we were invited to be a “Firefighter for a Day.” So much fun was had by all from learning how to perform CPR to the old school song “Staying Alive,” putting out a fire and climbing all the way to the top of the extended fire truck ladder for those who dared.
May brought our 2nd Annual “Old Town Festival.” Oh my goodness, vendors, food trucks, and music came from all over Central Texas. Everyone had an AMAZINGLY good time and it is such a FUN family event.
BPE (Best Party Ever), with its James Bond 007 theme, drew in a record attendance for the past 10 years. Many dressed the part. Awards were given. The Dessert Dash was a blast…. I didn’t know we had so many competitive chamber members. The silent auction was a HUGE success. And, once again, good times was had by all at the new Georgetown Sheraton Conference Center. I am not sure how the Chamber will be able to top this year. Though, we said that last year.
Lastly, this may surprise you because the weather was terrible, the Christmas Festival topped off my top 5 best moments of 2016. This was truly a community event. The vendors were troopers with the blistering wind, continuous rain and mud everywhere. The Rudolf Run was a big hit with over 300 runners. And wow, what a moment, when our Leander Christmas tree was lit by a student who the tree lighting contest. It truly is one of the most gorgeous trees I have seen in a long time. Everyone was in awe!
These were my top 5 moments of 2016. I know I left off so many more but still can’t forget our golf tournament, breakfast networking, the Mayor’s State of the City and the Living Leander Business Expo. Leander Chamber of Commerce prides itself on providing as many opportunities to meet people, do business and build relationships within our community. As fast as Leander is growing, you can’t help but still feel “small town” when it comes to the activities and events the Chamber puts on. And with any single one of our events whether big or small, whether once a year or our luncheons every month the most important thing the Chamber does is have FUN! There are lots of laughs and things that make you feel good as a person and doing business in Leander, Texas. As your outgoing Chairman this year, I just want to say THANK YOU!!! Thank you to the board of directors, to Bridget, the Chamber staff and ALL of the volunteers this past year. You are all amazing! I am proud and honored to have served on the board for the past 4 years and as your Chairman this year.
Happy New Year!!!! May 2017 be better than ever for you!!!! Tiesa Hollaway
